Self Contained

Self Contained

In 1997, I was 20 yrs. old, in my second year of college at UC Santa Cruz, and officially declared as an Art student. With my prerequisite drawing classes completed I could access the sculpture studios: ceramics, welding, bronze foundry, wood shop, and mixed media. Back then one's 'influencers' were our professors, studio techs, mentors, and fellow classmates.
My passion for new materials began here with "Self Contained" (1997) a kinetic self-portrait, made from oxy/acetylene gas welded steel, free standing at 24" x 36" x  72" tall with a central cube on gimble within a patchwork sphere on horizontal axles.
